The senior had been crowned at the school football game in September but was quick to think of Brittany Walters, whose mum, known as the 'school mum', had recently died of cancer. "It was really just for her, to elevate her day a bit, and she'd rather have her mother than a crown…but the thing was, I was telling her she was her mother's queen and just letting her know that she was loved by many and especially by me." After thinking of the community's "school mom", Covington had asked the headteachers for permission to pass her crown before walking towards Walters and her father. "All I could think of was my mum and how she wanted to be here and then the next thing I know Nyla walked up to me and she hugged me" , Walters said, reports WDAM. "I just didn't think about it, and then she started taking her crown off."

The two, while not strangers, had minimal interaction but were friendly with each other. "I felt so loved by her [Covington], and I felt so much love for her and for the whole school," Walters said. While the kind act was surprising, people who know Nyla say that's exactly the kind of person she is. "She's an exceptional student," assistant principal Benton Holder said. “Nyla just listened to her heart and gave selflessly…there was definite work from a higher being, God meticulously planned this all weeks ago and made this night just perfect.”

Brittany Walters made a promise to her mother the day she died of cancer: Brittany and her father would go to Homecoming, where the high schooler was nominated for Queen. Walters, who aspires to become a nurse, did not win the homecoming queen that night, but thanks to an act of kindness that enlightened a grieving family and community, she ended the night with a crown. After asking permission from school officials to do so, Covington walked over to Walters, standing next to her father dressed in a cowboy hat, and put the crown on him. "It was really just for her, to elevate her day a bit, and she'd rather have her mother than a crown…but the thing was, I was telling her she was her mother's queen and just letting her know that she was loved by many and especially by me.

Walters said she was thinking of her mother, the “school mom” to so many who stood next to them and watched them from the bleachers, when Covington's gesture took her by surprise. "I felt so loved by her, and I felt so much love for her and the whole school," Walters said of Covington. "It's just something materialistic, but we give it meaning, which is why I want her to keep it," she said. Sean Walters, Brittany's father, says their family deals with their grief "day in and day out".

"Just knowing that there are people who care about this story and knowing that, not directly, but maybe indirectly, maybe my life helps reach a lot of people, and that a part of that story continues [A.J.
